It’s a fair question. If you already use a good facial moisturiser and serum, do you really need a separate product for your eyes?
For mature skin, the answer lies less in having another product and more in understanding that the eye area is different — and so are many of the concerns that appear there.
And importantly, eye care shouldn’t begin only after those concerns become visible.
The Eye Area Has Its Own Problems

Think about the concerns we commonly associate with facial skin: dryness, loss of firmness, uneven tone and changes in texture.
Now think about the eye area.
Puffiness. Dark circles. Under-eye bags. Fine lines. Crepiness.
These are not simply smaller versions of the concerns we see elsewhere on the face.
The skin around the eyes is exceptionally thin and delicate, with relatively few sebaceous glands compared with oilier areas of the face. It also sits over a complex structure of muscles, blood vessels and underlying fat.
As we age, changes in skin elasticity, collagen, underlying fat and facial structure can make shadows, hollows, puffiness and under-eye bags increasingly visible.
That is why treating the eye area exactly like the rest of the face doesn’t always make sense.
Can You Use Facial Moisturiser Around Your Eyes?
Yes.
If your moisturiser is suitable for the eye area, there is nothing inherently wrong with applying it there. It can provide valuable hydration and help support the skin barrier.
But hydration alone may not be what you are looking for.
A dedicated eye cream can be formulated specifically for concerns such as the appearance of fine lines, puffiness and dark circles, while providing the hydration and nourishment this delicate area needs.
So the question isn’t really:
Can I use my moisturiser around my eyes?
You can.
The better question is:
What do I want my eye product to do?
If all you want is basic moisturisation, your facial moisturiser may be enough. If you want more targeted care for the visible signs of ageing around the eyes, a dedicated eye product has a different role.
Don’t Wait Until You See a Problem

Eye care isn’t only about responding to visible concerns.
By the time fine lines, dryness and crepiness become pronounced, we are often trying to improve changes that have been developing gradually for years.
A more considered approach is to care for the eye area before those changes become prominent.
That means maintaining hydration, supporting the skin barrier and protecting this delicate area from daily environmental exposure — particularly UV exposure.
You may not have noticeable fine lines or dryness today, but that doesn’t mean the eye area won’t benefit from appropriate care.
Think of eye care as proactive rather than corrective.
We don’t need to wait for our skin to show us what it has lost before we start looking after it.
Why This Matters Even More for Mature Skin
When we are younger, we may barely think about the skin around our eyes.
With mature skin, the differences can become much more apparent.
Fine lines become more established. Skin may become drier and more delicate. Puffiness can become more persistent. Changes beneath the skin can make dark circles, hollows and bags more noticeable.
This is why I believe eye care should be considered on its own merits rather than simply extending your facial moisturiser upwards.
Not because mature skin automatically needs more products, but because different skin concerns deserve the right formulation.
Eye Cream and Eye Oil Have Different Roles

At LA MAXIME, I don’t see eye cream and eye oil as interchangeable.
Youthful Eyes Eye Cream provides targeted care for the eye contour, including hydration and support for the appearance of fine lines, puffiness and dark circles.
Regenerating Eye Oil provides a different dimension of nourishment, particularly when mature skin feels dry, delicate or depleted.
They can be used individually or together depending on what your skin needs.
When Should You Apply Eye Cream?

Eye care should fit naturally into your skincare routine rather than becoming another complicated step.
After cleansing and preparing the skin, apply your eye cream around the eye contour before your facial moisturiser. Use only a small amount and apply it gently without pulling or stretching the skin.
If you also use an eye oil, apply it before the eye cream to deliver an additional layer of targeted nourishment to the eye area.
More product isn’t necessarily better.
Consistency and sequence matter more than quantity.
So, Do You Really Need an Eye Cream — and When Should You Start?
Not everyone does.
If your only concern is keeping the eye area moisturised and your facial moisturiser works well there, it may be enough.
But eye care isn’t only for mature skin or for when visible signs of ageing have already appeared.
Starting earlier can help maintain hydration and suppleness in this delicate area. As your skin matures and its needs change, you may benefit from more targeted eye care.
You don’t need to wait for fine lines to appear. From your 20s or 30s, an eye cream can become part of your daily skincare routine as proactive care for this delicate eye area. As your skin matures and its needs change, targeted eye care becomes more relevant.
For me, good skincare is not about adding more products. It is about understanding what your skin needs, where it needs it, and choosing the right formulation.
Good skincare is about caring for your skin now, not waiting for problems to appear.
